In 2018, she was pulled from the evil depths of the Korean dog meat market by a high-profile rescue group. Her body was saved — but her spirit remained locked in survival. Too shut down. Too afraid. Too feral for anyone to truly see her. So, they left her behind. For seven long years, she sat in a shelter — forgotten.
Until I (Tia) heard her story.
Upon my first meeting with her, I struggled with the fact that I didn’t have room for her at our facility. And leaving her behind wore heavy on my mind and heart. Weeks passed and I couldn’t get her out of my mind. So I made the decision to bring her into my home…to live with me and hope that with time and love, she would heal. A place where broken souls are gently pieced back together, where the swamps have some sort of magickal powers.
I created a sacred space just for her: a quiet crate turned into a cocoon, lined with soft blankets and draped in a pale pink cover to hush the world outside. It’s become her haven — hidden, warm, safe. Outside her little cave, the rustling cypress trees, croaking frogs, and distant birdcalls wrapped around her like a lullaby only nature could sing.
She doesn’t trust people. Not yet. But we are slowly making progress. The pacing has softened and slowed down. The pauses are longer. She gazes out over the water, and for the first time in a long time, she isn’t just surviving — she’s beginning to feel safe.
Her journey is far from over — medically, emotionally, and spiritually. But we believe in the magick of this place, in the healing power of time and love, and most of all — we believe in her.
Because here, in the heart of Louisiana, the swamps don’t just shelter the wounded. They heal them.
It’s taken us some time to come up with a name for her. The right name. The perfect name. People from all over the world have joined in to share their ideas with us. We thought about giving her a Korean name but then decided that we didn’t want her to have any attachment to her past. We need some new, something free, something meaningful…Phoenix – the fiery bird who arose from the ashes.
Phoenix has been spiritually broken. She will be with us for a long time as we deal with her medical issues and try to work with her behaviorally. But if someone comes along who would like to give her a safe place to call home permanently, we would explore an adoption. For now we would love sponsors and supporters to join Phoenix’s flight into a new life.
