In November of 2021, we were called in by an animal shelter in Mississippi to take in eight Bloodhounds and Bloodhound mixes from one of the most horrific neglect cases we’ve seen.
There was a photo from that yard, of a literal pyramid of bones. The last time it was shared, Facebook blocked it for being too graphic. That alone should tell you how bad it was. These dogs didn’t just come from neglect, they came from survival.
All but two of them were painfully shy, shut down, and deeply traumatized.
Today, most of them are still with us. Their mother was the lucky one — she found a home. Their father was adopted by our own employee, Lisel, and was loved fiercely until he passed away from cancer.
Two of our current sponsorship dogs, Elrod and John Boy (these sisters half-brother), also came from this same nightmare.
And then there are Oda Mae and Myrtle Belle.
Both of their parents were full-size, purebred Bloodhounds, yet they are much smaller than they should be, their bodies forever marked by the severe malnutrition they endured as puppies. What hurts more is how long it took for their spirits to feel safe again.
Now they are almost 5 years old.
Oda Mae is the wild child. She is goofy, bold, and bursting with life now that she knows what safety feels like.
Myrtle Belle is her opposite. She’s gentle, tender, and quietly observant. When she catches a scent, she does this little bowing motion, like her body is politely asking permission to follow her instincts. It’s impossible not to fall in love with her.
These two have survived hell together, and they must stay together.
They need a home with someone who truly understands Bloodhounds. Someone with experience, patience, and a deep respect for shy dogs who don’t trust easily, because trust was once a luxury they didn’t have.
This isn’t a “they’ll warm up in a week” situation.
This is a you earn their hearts slowly situation. But once you do?
You’ll have something rare. Something sacred.
A love built on safety, consistency, and healing.
If you are an experienced Bloodhound home, and your heart has room for two souls who have already endured more than most ever should, Oda Mae and Myrtle Belle are waiting.
